Share our Strength Background

Share Our Strength began in the basement of a row house on Capitol Hill in 1984, in response to the ‘84-‘85 famine in Ethiopia. Brother and sister Bill and Debbie Shore started the organization with the belief that everyone has a strength to share in the global fight against hunger and poverty, and that in these shared strengths lie sustainable solutions. Today SOS focus these strengths on making No Kid Hungry - a reality in North America.

Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign is ending childhood hunger in North America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. The No Kid Hungry campaign connects kids in need to effective nutrition programs like school breakfast and summer meals and teaches low-income families to cook healthy, affordable meals through Cooking Matters. This work is accomplished through the No Kid Hungry network, made up of private citizens, public officials, nonprofits, business leaders and others providing innovative hunger solutions in their communities.

Share Our Strength Winnipeg Beginnings

Share our Strength Winnipeg began in 1994 with a Chefs Dinner held at St. John’s Ravenscourt. The initial team worked on the first fund-raising dinner and successfully raised $12,500. Everything was donated for this dinner and that tradition continues on to today.

After the first year of success, the committee expanded and added a second event, the Taste of the Nation, which continues to be supported by local restaurants and industry beverage partners. Each year Winnipeg’s newest restaurants and brightest chefs come together in support of the cause to end childhood hungry in our community.

How Share Our Strength Winnipeg Helps

SHARE OUR STRENGTH WINNIPEG raises money for hunger relief by hosting two signature dining events each year. Everyone involved in the preparation of these events – from restaurant chefs to serving staff, committee members, vendors and suppliers – donates their product, time and talent. These events are Taste of the Nation, Winnipeg’s premier food and beverage tasting event, and the Chef’s Dinner, in which the top chefs from the city’s hospitality community come together for one evening of epicurean delight.

  • 100% of the ticket proceeds go directly to hunger relief.
  • Since 1994, SOS Winnipeg has raised almost $2,000,000 for hunger relief.
